I don’t give a shit that he was joking. I don’t give a shit about how he’s always this sarcastic. Humour never excuses racism.
The British called Chinese people “dogs” when they illegally pumped opium into China and decimated its people and economy during the Opium Wars. They called us “dogs” when they fined China for the cost of the war, colonized Hong Kong, and forcefully opened up the ports in Guangzhou. They solidified this humiliation and dehumanization by allowing its fellow colonizers to systematically exploit and cripple China.
Lucy Liu is a Chinese American woman; she is a member of the Chinese diaspora. The same Chinese diaspora who, by economic, political, and social pressures and desperation scattered around the world because the British ignited China’s Century of Humiliation, and prolonged the stagnation of its economy and development.
Did Martin Freeman mean to bring this history to mind? Nope, probably not. That’s the privilege that he has, you see. He doesn’t belong to the sex/gender/identity that is forced to learn and to be accustomed to being called a “bitch” and to jump through the mental hoops to pretend that it’s a contextless, not-that-degrading word. In fact, he has the privilege of flexing his comedic muscle by, SURPRISE!, commenting on her looks of all things.
He doesn’t belong to the people who were degraded for generations as animals, nor does he have to live everyday trying to be “badass bitch” and not a “mean bitch” and to accept every “bitch, please” as if it were your given name. That’s the real joke, folks.

I don’t understand why anyone, especially those who claim to be Chinese, can think what Martin Freeman says in that interview is OK.
As Chinese myself, I just want to say: No, it’s not OK.
Racist/Sexist or not, saying things like that at least reveals that he is a horrible person.
And I actually waited years for that movie! He just have to ruin it for me!
